LOWER LAKE >> Lower Lake High School freshman Roy Percoats won the 100-meter dash and finished second in the 200 on Wednesday afternoon as Lower Lake hosted Fort Bragg, Willits and Clear Lake in a Coastal Mountain Conference track and field meet.
One Middletown athlete also took part, Charlize Hill, and the freshman won both the 1,600 (6 minutes, 4.28 seconds) and the 3,200 (14:21.38) in the varsity girls division.
Varsity boys
Percoats won the 100 in a personal-best 11.42 seconds.
“Roy is now third all time in school history, and the eighth fastest freshman in the Redwood Empire for the 100 meters,” Lower Lake head coach Bobby Landgraf said. “He also took second in the 200 (23.58), though it wasn’t the race he wanted. The sky is the limit for this talented kid.”
Alfonso Rones, a junior, won the discus for Lower Lake with a throw of 151 feet, 7 inches, more than 30 feet longer than the runner-up in the event.
“Alfonso is now fourth all time in school history for the discus, No. 1 in the league by 20 feet, and tied for 10th in the North Coast Section,” Landgraf said. “He is an incredibly dedicated athlete, and if there was ever a kid who could challenge Bryson Trask’s league record (set in 2019), I believe it would be Alfonso. Hard work pays off.”
Lower Lake’s Raijhier McKneely, a junior, finished third with a personal-best time of 16.55 in the 110 hurdles.
“This is only Raijhier’s second hurdle race of the year,” Landgraf said. “He debuted a lot later than the rest of the kids in the league, so we could fine tune some of the technical aspects of his race. He has a lot of growth still to come. He is also fourth all time in school history in that race.”
Varsity girls
The Lower Lake 4×100 relay team of senior Lynneah Daniels, junior Irianna Milano, junior Crystal Montanez and senior Mary Watson finished first in 53.12.
“They’re finally at a time they are happy with, or at least can settle for,” Landgraf said. “It would put them third all time in our school history, and first in the Coastal Mountain Conference right now, but they’re not satisfied with a 53.12. This is a squad that knows they can run in the low 52s, so they’re eager to race again.”
Lower Lake’s Juliette Backer-Lewis, a senior, won the shotput with a personal-best throw of 27-10.5.
“Juliette has been putting in a ton of work with throws coach Tristen Ales,” Landgraf said. “She’s come a long way since she’s started, but she isn’t finished. She’s now ranked second in the league with that throw, so she’s got more in the tank still.”
Backer-Lewis also won the discus with a throw of 72-3.
Lower Lake’s Angela Martin, a junior, placed third in the 3,200 with a season-best 15:49.78.
“Angela is one of those kids you just can’t help but want to see succeed not only on the track, but in life,” Landgraf said. “She always has a smile on her face, and I absolutely love the fight she has in her.”
Frosh-soph boys
Lower Lake sophomore Bryan Gonzales won the discus with a personal-best toss of 98-5.
“Bryan is a beast,” Landgraf said. “He’s transitioned from sprints to throws and he’s having quite a bit of success.”
Gonzales also placed second in the shotput with a throw of 36-3.5.
Also for Lower Lake, sophomore Logan Case won the pole vault in 8-6.
“He had an OK day by his standards,” Landgraf said. “He wanted 9-0, but it’ll come. That would be our frosh/soph record if he can get it.”
Frosh/soph girls
Stella Aleman, a sophomore, won the 100 (13.63) and 200 (28.56) in personal-best times of 13.63 and 28.56, respectively.
“This is one of my hardest working athletes,” Landgraf said. “She has been showing up to everything since the season started and was training all winter. Those times put her No. 8 and No. 5 all time in school history as well as No. 7 and No. 6 in the league.”
Team scoring
Fort Bragg won all four divisions. In varsity boys competition, the Timberwolves finished with 194 points to Lower Lake’s 68, Willits’ 16 and Clear Lake’s 10. In varsity girls scoring, it was Fort Bragg 144, Lower Lake 73, Middletown 16, Willits 16 and Clear Lake 12.
