LAKEPORT >> An 11-4 second quarter helped McKinleyville pull away in a 41-29 victory over the Clear Lake Cardinals in the varsity girls basketball season opener for both teams Friday night in Lakeport.

Jazmin Wiebusch led the Cardinals with eight points, including two 3-pointers, Atiana Patino added six points with one 3-pointer, and Faith McIntire had five plays and a team-best 10 rebounds.

Clear Lake (0-1) cut McKinleyville’s 20-7 halftime lead to 29-23 after three quarters, but the Cardinals couldn’t carry over that momentum into the final period.

Freshman Amelie Davis pulled down eight rebounds and had four steals and two points. Patino had four steals, three blocks, three assists and two rebounds to go along with her six points.

Clear Lake won the junior varsity game 43-28 behind 18 points from Hailey Perez and 15 more from Camara Wittman.

“The team played well tonight despite having only seven players,” Clear Lake head coach Tony Farrington said. “However, we got into some early foul trouble and tired. The team pushed through the fatigue and showed some good hustle and made some critical shots to keep us competitive.”

Anjoli Scott scored four points for the Cardinals (1-0).

“This game also gave us a glimpse on the key things we need to work on such as moving the ball better and creating higher-percentage shots while rushing passes that result in unnecessary turnovers.”

Clear Lake’s teams are on the road Tuesday to play South Fork. The JVs play at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity girls at 8:30 p.m.
