BOONVILLE >> Mountain Vista Middle School co-ed soccer head coach Oscar Lopez said he didn’t have to motivate his players at halftime Wednesday afternoon during a non-league game against Anderson Valley.
They did it all by themselves.
Mountain Vista (8-3) had a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game.
“I thought, ‘Here we go,’” Lopez said. “Ninety-eight percent of the game we were on their half (of the field),” Lopez said. “It’s not that we didn’t have opportunities in the first half, we just couldn’t hit the target.”
Before the second half started, Lopez said his players took the initiative during the halftime break and motivated themselves to play better in the second half.
“The kids just did it on their own,” Lopez said. “They found some energy and got after it.”
Mountain Vista’s four-goal surge in the second half was led by Lalo Serrato, who finished the game with a hat trick. Erik Gomez and Cami Yapelli had the Lancers’ other goals. Hiliana Rico had two assists.
Mountain Vista travels to Lower Lake on Monday to play Obsidian Middle School at 4:30 p.m.
In other middle school co-ed soccer action Wednesday:
Middletown 1, Upper Lake 0
At Middletown, unable to field their normal starting lineup, the Middletown Broncos still found a way to win, beating the Upper Lake Wildcats on Roe Kilstrom’s breakaway goal in the second half.
“Unfortunately, we had some injuries last game that forced us to sit starters and limit others’ playing time, so we couldn’t find a groove on offense, but our defense played really well together,” Middletown head coach Ernest Pulido said.
Upper Lake came close to scoring in the first half when a shot was partially blocked by Middletown keeper Ruben Rincon. He got enough of the ball to slow it down, allowing fullback Anaya Kilstrom to clear it.
In the second half of a still scoreless game, Upper Lake had a penalty kick that bounced off the left post.
Middletown (4-0 league, 5-0 overall) has a bye Monday before returning to action next Wednesday at home against Terrace School at 4:30 p.m.
Obsidian 3, Terrace School 1
At Lakeport, Marco Soto and Evelin Vargas scored goals in the second half to lift Obsidian Middle School to a win over Terrace School.
Soto also scored in the first half, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
“Terrace continued to fight hard until the end, but OMS finished strong and earned the win,” Obsidian head coach Andres Hernandez said.
Obsidian is 2-1 in league play. The Bears return home Monday to play Mountain Vista at 4:30 p.m.
