ANDERSON >> Mikaela Rico, Kat Wheelan and Kylee Denham all scored goals Wednesday as the Kelseyville High School girls soccer team beat Anderson 3-1 in non-league action at Anderson.
“The Lady Knights had many chances and shots on goal, but again the shots just weren’t making it into the net,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “The team has great potential, but we just need to be more confident.”
Rico’s goal, assisted by Jacky Chavez, put Kelseyville on top 1-0 midway through the first half. Anderson tied it up 1-1 by halftime.
In the second half, Rico fed Wheelan for the go-ahead goal in the 67th minute to put Kelseyville (2-0) ahead to stay. Denham’s goal a few minutes later gave the Knights some breathing room.
“Not that this may be a factor, but I have some new starters and (they) still need to adjust to each other on the field,” Rodriguez said.
Vanessa Reyes, Mya Ogo, Xiomara Arias, Arionna Sanderson and Regina Rico anchored the Kelseyville defense.
“The Cubs tried their hardest to score and had some nice balls sent up to their forwards, but our defense was there to stop them,” Rodriguez said. “They had some nice shots on our keeper, Cassie Rodriguez, but she was able to stop them.”
Kelseyville is on the road Saturday to play Urban (San Francisco) at 1 p.m.
