Team takes home nine firsts, 23 medals overall from Gladiator Brawl

LOWER LAKE >> Winning 23 medals, including nine firsts, the Gladiator Wrestling Club won its own tournament, the annual Gladiator Brawl Regional Championships, held Sunday at Lower Lake High School.

The Gladiators also ranked first with the most combined pins and technical falls, including a tournament-best 29 pins.

The Gladiator Brawl closes out the regular season for area teams. Next up are the California USA Wrestling State Championships.

Among the Gladiators who distinguished themselves was Kailaya Philpot, an eighth-grader. She competed in five different divisions, winning three of them – middle school girls, sixth through eighth grade, at 135 pounds; middle school girls, sixth through eighth grade, 135-148 pounds; and high school girls, 120-130 pounds. She also finished second in the 15-and-under co-ed middle school division for 135 pounds, and fourth in the high school boys division, 118-130 pounds.

Other Gladiator champions were Fernando Calvillo, 15-and-under co-ed middle school division, 135 pounds; Thomas Philpot, 12-and-under (born in 2014-15), 103 pounds; Sebastian James, 10-and-under (bornin 2016-17), 95 pounds; Fatima Rivera-Barbosa, middle school girls, sixth through eighth grade, 90 pounds; John Young, 12-and-under (born in 2014-15), 125 pounds; and Daniel Garner, high school boys, 185 pounds.

Rivera-Barbosa also finished fourth in the 12-and-under (born in 2014-15), 94-pound division, and Young was fourth in the 10-and-under (born in 2016-17), 95-pound division.

Second-place medals went to Elijah Tucker, 10-and-under (born in 2016-17), 71-pound division; Tucker in the 10-and-under (born in 2016-17), 78-pound division; and to coach Hugo Salazar in the men’s open middleweight division.

Third-place medals went to Cameryn Gamble-Ray in the 15-and-under co-ed middle school division, 165 pounds; to Michael Garner in the 15-and-under co-ed middle school division, 122 pounds; to Cristiano Lopez in the 10-and-under (born in 2016-17), 85-pound division; to Sophia Olea in the 10-and-under (born in 2016-17), 78-pound division; to Zeus Romo, 8-and-under (born in 2018-19), 68-pound division; to Chad Smith in the 15-and-under co-ed middle school division, 135 pounds; and to coach Richard Tucker in the men’s open heavyweight division.

Fourth-place finishers were Riley Garner, 12-and-under (born in 2014-15), 125 pounds, and to coach Raylon Roy in the men’s open middleweight division.

Elijah Lopez placed fifth in the 15-and-under co-ed middle school division, 122 pounds, and coach Bertin Santiago was fifth in the men’s open middleweight division.
