LOWER LAKE >> CORE Wrestling Club members competed in four tournaments last weekend, two of them on Sunday and another two on Saturday. Many awards were brought home to Lake County.

On Sunday, two club members attended the Top Fueler’s Winter Classic in Red Bluff while two others were entered in the SAWA Sacramento Junior Invite.

In Red Bluff, Tony Howland captured third place in the varsity sixth-through-eighth-grade 128-pound bracket, going 3-1 with two pins and one technical fall. Teammate Daniel Clark added a fourth-place finish in the varsity sixth-through-eighth-grade 76-pound bracket, going 2-2 with one pin.

In Sacramento, Tucker Heywood double-bracketed, finishing first in the boys under-12 bracket for 95-100 pounds where he went 3-0 with two pins, and taking second in the boys middle school bracket for 92-100 pounds, finishing 3-1 and losing a two-way tie for first place decided by points.

Eric Holley added a second-place finish in the 8-and-under bracket for 50-53 pounds, going 3-1 with two pins and one technical fall.

During Saturday action at the NorCal Elementary State Championships in Orland, seven CORE wrestlers took to the mat.

Jessie Taylor Jr. battled his way to a second-place finish in the kindergarten-first grade 60-pound bracket, posting a 1-1 record with a pin.

Finishing second was Heywood in the sixth-through-eight grade 100-pound bracket with one pin. Third-place medals went to Holley, who went 4-1 with three pins in the second-through-third grade 55-pound bracket; Sampson Wetmore, who went 1-1 in the fourth-through-fifth grade 90-pound bracket; and Timothy Williams, who went 3-1 with three pins in the fourth-through-fifth grade 75-pound bracket.

Though he didn’t place, Jonathan “JJ” Blue went 2-2 with one pin in the kindergarten-first grade 60-pound bracket.

“This weekend at the NorCal Elementary State Championships, CORE Wrestling had a good showing by having placers in each division,” CORE coach Pedro Garrido said. “Standout Timothy Williams went 4-1, wrestling better each match to eventually having a barnburner against Middletown (opponent) in the third-place match and coming out victorious.”

Also on Saturday, CORE athletes traveled to Medford, Oregon to compete in the Rocky Mountain Wrestling’s Most Wanted Tournament.

Kaitlyn Crow triple-bracketed, finishing first with two pins in the girls under-12 division (72 pounds); taking second with 2-1 record and two pins in the girls under-10 division (72 pounds); and placing third in the girls under-10 division (80 pounds) with a 2-1 record and two pins.

Colin Crow also triple-bracketed, placing third in the boys under-9 division (53 pounds) with a 2-1 record with one pin; taking third in the boys under-9 division (57 pounds) with a 2-2 record and two pins; and finishing fifth in the boys under-8 division (54 pounds) with a 2-2 record with one technical fall.

Wyatt Hooten double-bracketed, taking third in the boys under-10 division (73 pounds) with a 3-1 record and three pins; and placing fourth in the boys under-10 division (69 pounds) with a 2-2 record and two pins.

“Wyatt, Kaitlyn and Colin scored a whopping 106 points with just the three of them,” coach Daniel Hooten said. “The kids had a great time. They got to do a leg riding camp with a big name in the sport (Ian Butler) on Friday. Saturday the kids showed up and made a name for Lake County wrestling by earning eight medals. I see a very bright future in the sport for them because of their hard work, discipline and good attitudes. I am very proud of their development.”
