She sinks 18 of 25 free throws at District/State championships in Modesto

UPPER LAKE >> Upper Lake Middle School basketball star Marina Quiett advanced deep into the annual Elks Hoop Shoot free-throw contest, advancing to the Northern California Districts and State Finals on Jan. 31 at Prescott Junior High School in Modesto where she went up against competition from around the state as well as the states of Nevada and Hawaii.

Quiett placed a solid fourth after making 18 of 25 free throws in the 13-year-old bracket. As a member of the Wildcats’ A girls basketball team this season, she averaged nearly 20 points a game, including a season-high of 29 in a game against Obsidian Middle School of Clearlake.

The winner from Hawaii made 22 out of 25 and now advances to the Region 7 Finals on Feb. 21 in Boulder City, Nevada.

The Elks Hoop Shoot is the largest and most visible of the many youth activities sponsored by the Elks Lodge. A national program, it is open to all boys and girls ages 8-13 regardless of race or creed. More than 3 million boys and girls will participate this year.
