POINT ARENA >> Clear Lake High School’s junior varsity girls basketball team went 2-1 and finished second in a round-robin tournament Saturday at Point Arena. Other competing teams were Anderson Valley, Willits and the host Pirates.

Clear Lake beat Point Arena 43-26 and Anderson Valley 52-41. The Cardinals’ only loss was to Willits, 41-36, the undefeated tournament champion.

“We got two wins, but they were difficult to obtain,” Clear Lake head coach Tony Farrington said. “The players, for whatever reason, seemed distracted and lost focus much of each game.”

Against Point Arena, Hailey Perez led the way with 16 points while All-Tournament selection Ava Gamble added 13 points and Camara Wittman six.

Against Anderson Valley, Gamble led the way with 13 points, Macie Snyder added 10, Wittman nine, Cali Albaum eight, and Perez and Aleeya Bondi six each.

Against Willits, Perez topped the Cardinals with 12 points followed by Snyder and Gamble with six apiece.

“I knew that this tournament would pose some obstacles for us,” Farrington said. “We had only seven players, and two players were ill, so that adversely affected some of our play and was a barrier to keeping our energy elevated. By game three against Willits, which has a roster of 10 players, we just lost steam and could not effectively dig in and run both sides of the court. That was difficult for our team, but they fought nonetheless and hung in there, pushing through the illness and fatigue, which is a reminder of what I tell my team all the time; there is growth in discomfort, and growth is what I look for in my team, not the end result.”

Clear Lake, now 14-2 on the season, resumes North Central League I play Tuesday against Upper Lake.
