MIDDLETOWN >> Sophia Azevedo scored 13 points while teammates Katera Gotz and Sophia Perez each had seven as the Middletown Middle School A team knocked off the Terrace Vikings 30-24 in league action Monday night in Middletown.

“The game was neck and neck all the way through,” Middletown head coach Wayne Harbison said. “Katera Gotz’s defense proved to be the difference maker in the game.”

Cassie Candelario-Gamez scored nine points for the Vikings while Bella Espinoza had eight.

“Casse Candelario-Gamez is a one-girl wrecking crew, but Katera Gotz did an amazing job defensively on her,” Harbison said.

Harbison praised the strong play he received on offense from Azevedo, Gotz and Perez as well as the outstanding defensive contributions of Gotz, Rylee Gabert and Remmi Harbison.

Middletown is now 4-1 in league play and 6-4 overall.

Middletown won another close one from Terrace in the B game, 21-19.

“We came out strong in the first quarter and had great ball movement and execution,” Middletown head coach Dustin Fults said of the 10-4 lead the Broncos established in the first quarter. “Then we had a flat second quarter, only scoring two points. The Terrace team did a good job with adjustments the rest of the game, so our shots were more contested.”

Added Fults, “Our defense was the difference down the stretch as we got a little more aggressive even after our best defender, Aaliyah Guancayco, fouled out.”

Lola Fults and Madison Lewis led Middletown with six points apiece. Emmi Hernandez had five.

Middletown plays Terrace in Lakeport on Thursday.
