UKIAH >> The Middletown Mustangs fell 45-31 to the Ukiah Wildcats in a North Coast Section Foundation varsity girls basketball game Tuesday night at Ukiah High School.
NCS Foundation games are fundraisers for the section’s scholarship program and do not count toward a team’s win-loss record.
“Turnovers hurt us,” Middletown interim head coach Shannon Williams said. “We came out a little flat but were hanging in there. They just ran out of steam at the end.”
Sarah Fetters, a senior guard, led the Mustangs with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Thaly Rodriguez added five points, including Middletown’s other 3-pointer.
“Some of our starters got into foul trouble, but it was a good opportunity for our bench to get some good play time and have to work through some game situations against a very solid team.”
Ukiah erased a 21-20 Middletown halftime lead with a 16-3 third quarter and never looked back.
Izzi Hoogendoorn led the Mustangs with eight rebounds and also had four steals and four assists. Fetters pulled down six rebounds.
Middletown hosts Willits next Tuesday.
Middletown’s junior varsity squad used a big second half to beat Ukiah 40-28. The Mustangs outscored the Wildcats 30-15 over the final two quarters.
“The girls played consistent basketball for four quarters,” said Williams, who was filling in for JV head coach Daryl Dacosta. “We were down slightly going into the third quarter, and we came out with a lot of energy, and they never let up.”
Grace Williams filled up the stats sheet for Middletown with team highs in points (13) and rebounds (11). She also finished with four assists, four steals and two blocks. Ally Cherry added seven points and a team-best eight steals. Chloe Pulido finished with six points while Emma Davis and Jolene Holley each had five points. Davis pulled down six rebounds.
“Freshman Grace Williams stepped up her offense and rebounding, which was clutch,” Williams said. “Ally Cherry was another standout player all around with her steals and rebounding.”
In other Foundation Game action Tuesday:
Willits 58, Clear Lake 50
At Willits, the Willits Wolverines beat the Clear Lake Cardinals 58-50.
No other details were reported.
Clear Lake’s JVs beat Willits 34-32 behind 12 points from Hailey Perez, seven from Cali Albaum, six from Macie Snyder and five from Ava Gamble.
“The team struggled to run our offense, but that is expected at this early stage in the season,” Clear Lake head coach Tony Farrington said. “However, they hustled and played good defense, forcing a number of key turnovers.”
The Cardinals took a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter.
“We have a pretty green team, but I think that we have a good foundation to work with,” Farrington said.
Clear Lake returns home Friday as part of a four-game set with McKinleyville. JV girls action tips off at 3 p.m., the JV boys follow at 4:30 p.m., the varsity girls play at 6 p.m., and the varsity boys follow at 7:30 p.m.
