Hooten, Lopez claim MVP awards in annual ‘Battle of the Lake’ series

UPPER LAKE >> Lower Lake’s pee wee football team beat Northshore 34-0 during the “Battle of the Lake” Saturday afternoon at Upper Lake High School.

Lower Lake won all three games with Northshore – pee wee, junior varsity and varsity – to win “Battle of the Lake” honors. Wyatt Hooten (offense) and Christiano Lopez (defense) won the series MVP awards. Hooten rushed for 99 yards, two touchdowns and an extra point. Lopez had four solo tackles and a shared sack with Damion Manjivar.

“It’s always fun playing Northshore for the “Battle of Lake,” Lower Lake head coach Daniel Hooten said. “There is a trophy on the line and we get to pick MVPs for the game.”

Vinnie Steffen added 94 rushing yards and two extra points, Erian Gonzalez and Maxxwell Wilkins both scored touchdowns, and Sebastian James had three catches for 32 yards, including a touchdown and an extra point.

Manjivar finished with four solo tackles while Camari Onwuasoeze had two solo tackles.

“We had the opportunity to see some kids play on the defense and they stood out,” Hooten said. “Jesse Cornett-Jones and Steven Barios both played very aggressively.”

Barios had two sacks and Cornett-Jones two solo tackles.

Lower Lake takes a 6-1-2 record into its regular-season finale next Saturday at Middletown (2-3-4). Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. The Trojans have already qualified for the league playoffs beginning Nov. 1.
