LAKEPORT >> The Westshore Cardinals moved to within a win of a perfect regular season with a 35-0 victory over the Sonoma Dragons in the varsity division of the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League on Saturday night in Lakeport.
Westshore (9-0) scored all the points it would need on a John Pasalo 34-yard touchdown run. Isiah McCloud’s conversion kick made it 8-0.
After taking over on downs later in the first quarter, Pasalo again scored on a 34-yard run. The conversion kick boosted Westshore’s lead to 16-0.
Pasalo’s third touchdown of the game, on a 45-yard run, and a conversion pass from Nathan Heath to Dillon Egan following a bad snap on the conversion kick, put the Cardinals’ lead at 23-0. Javon Evans then intercepted a Sonoma pass and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown and a 29-0 lead.
Sonoma opened the second half with an onside kick that Westshore recovered. The Cardinals quickly marched down the field and scored on a Pasalo 10-yard run for a 35-0 lead. The mercy rule went into effect at that point.
Pasalo rushed for 168 yards on only six carries, four of those touchdowns.
Jake Hayes anchored the defense with eight solo tackles followed by Michael Knight Jr. with four. Evans had three tackles and an interception return for the touchdown.
“Our kids played great, they definitely put on a show for our eighth-grade night,” Westshore head coach Sid Percaccio said. “Sonoma has some very good athletes on their team and they are very well coached.”
Sonoma is 4-5 on the season.
Westshore travels to Kelseyville (5-4) next Saturday to close out the regular season. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
“We have Kelseyville coming up and they have been on a roll lately, so we are now focused on getting ready for the next one,” Percaccio said.
