MIDDLETOWN >> In a battle of the last two undefeated junior varsity teams, the Middletown Colts shut out the Westshore Cardinals 25-0 in Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League action Saturday at Bill Foltmer Field in Middletown.
“Middletown came ready to play,” Westshore head coach Jeremy Hopkins said. “They bullied us around. I thought we would come out with more fire and at least give them a game.”
Middletown (7-0) had a 19-0 lead before Westshore (6-1) ran its first play. The Colts received the kickoff and marched down the field for a touchdown and 6-0 lead. Middletown recovered the ensuing onside kick and scored again to go up 13-0. The Colts recovered another onside kick to set up their next touchdown or a 19-0 lead.
“We worked all week on defending this,” Hopkins said of the onside kick.
Middletown opened the second half with an onside kick, recovered the ball and went on to score again for a 25-0 lead.
The Colts defense made it hard for the Cardinals to do much on offense. Quarterback LJ Hopkins finished with just 37 rushing yards while passing for another 33 yards, all of them to receiver Brady Liske.
Westshore’s defensive leaders were Chance Poland with nine tackles, Layton Butcher with seven tackles, Hopkins with six tackles and Liske with five tackles.
Middletown scoring and stats were not reported.
