NAPA >> Tuning up for their big first-place showdown next week with Middletown, the Westshore Cardinals dominated Napa 34-0 in Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League junior varsity action Saturday in Napa.

LJ Hopkins rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns while Layton Butcher ran for two scores. Westshore’s defense also excelled as Butcher, Adrian Wright and Noah Cochrane had two sacks each. Julian Rascon finished with four tackles.

Westshore (6-0) stopped Napa on a fourth-down play in the first quarter and scored three plays later on a Hopkins 8-yad run, which was set up by a Hopkins 15-yard run.

Wright made several key stops on defense during Napa’s next possession, leading to a punt. A Hopkins 31-yard run to the Napa 10-yard line set up Butcher’s 10-yard touchdown run.  Hopkins scored a short time later on a 10-yard run.

After another defensive stop, the Cardinals scored again on a Hopkins 25-yard run.

In the second half, a John Franklin 25-yard run set up a Butcher 3-yard touchdown run, at which point the mercy rule went into effect.

Jackson Bosch intercepted two passes for Westshore and Brady Liske had one.

“Our D came to play,” Westshore head coach Jeremy Hopkins said. “We are playing a very physical brand of football right now, which is a good sign, especially since we play a powerhouse like Middletown next week. It should be a fun game. They are a very good team, and it’ll be a challenge.”

Middletown also brings a 6-0 record into next Saturday’s contest, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at Bill Foltmer Field in Middletown.
