CLOVERDALE >> Quarterback LJ Hopkins rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns and passed for another 79 yards and a score as the undefeated Westshore junior varsity team beat Cloverdale 37-6 in Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League play Saturday evening at Cloverdale.

John Franklin added 51 yards rushing while scoring his first and second career touchdowns.

A 60-yard pass from Hopkins to Odin Walker set up Westshore’s first touchdown as Franklin scored on the next play, a 1-yard run over the right side behind the blocks of Ethan White and Josiah Smith. Hopkins’ conversion kick gave the Cardinals an 8-0 lead.

Westshore’s defense forced a three-and-out, and the Cardinals added to their lead when a Hopkins 28-yard run set up a Franklin 6-yard touchdown run.

Cloverdale’s quarterback scrambled for a long touchdown run for the Chargers’ lone points. Westshore answered almost immediately on a Hopkins 42-yard run. Hopkins scored again, this time on a 16-yard run, right before halftime to increase the Cardinals’ lead.

Westshore added an insurance touchdown on its first possession of the second half. Runs by Franklin set up a 19-yard touchdown pass from Hopkins to Layton Butcher, who caught the ball in left flat and worked his way into the end zone.

“Defensively we have some stuff we need to clean up, but it was good be back out there after the league bye (for the Labor Day weekend),” Westshore head coach Jeremy Hopkins said.

Westshore is back home this Saturday to play Willits (2-1) at 5:30 p.m. Pee wee kickoff is 3:30 p.m. and the varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m.
