SANTA ROSA >> When the Kelseyville Knights open their North Central League I schedule early next month, they’ll be battled tested, that’s for sure.

Kelseyville traveled to Santa Rosa on Wednesday to take on powerhouse Sonoma Academy in a non-league varsity boys soccer contest that went to the host Coyote 4-0.

“It was not the best of game for us today, but that’s to be expected when you play a team of Sonoma Academy’s caliber,” Kelseyville head coach Kc White said. “They are very good. They won the section last year and you can see why. With that said, three of their goals were completely avoidable on our end. Mistakes cost us dearly today.”

While coaches are never happy about losses, the experience of taking on a team like Sonoma Academy (1-0-1) could pay dividends down the road.

“I schedule games like this not only for the good competition, but to learn something about my team and where we need to improve,” White said. “I feel like we learned a lot and will get better because of having played in this game. This game in no way hinders our team goal of winning league this year. We will regroup and come back stronger.”

Sonoma Academy scored twice in each half against Kelseyville (2-2).

“One thing I liked about today is that guys who came out were cheering on the guys that replaced them on the field,” White said. “They remained positive throughout and that’s important for improving our team morale.”

Kelseyville is home Saturday to take on South Fork at 1 p.m.
