KELSEYVILLE >> It didn’t come easy, but the Kelseyville Knights continued their host start in 2025 with a 2-0 victory over the Upper Lake Cougars in non-league varsity girls soccer action Tuesday in Kelseyville.

Kelseyville improved to 5-0 with its latest win while Upper Lake dropped to 1-1.

“The Lady Knights had a slow start against the Upper Lake Cougars, but they found a way to break through,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said.

It was a scoreless game until Kelseyville’s Kylee Denham banged a shot toward the Upper Lake keeper late in the first half. Teammate Jocelyn Olea-Lopez was there to knock it in for a 1-0 lead, which was the halftime score.

Dakota Burton’s throw-in early in the second half set up the second and final Knights goal as Mikaela Rico buried the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Kelseyville had chances to add to its lead down the stretch, but the Upper Lake defense held firm, according to Rodriguez.

“A tough loss on the road for the Cougars,” Upper Lake head coach Kathleen O’Rourke said. “They battled hard through the heat, a short bench and injuries for the whole game but weren’t able to stop two goals from the Kelseyville side.”

Added O’Rourke, “Everyone stepped up when we needed them to with injuries forcing most players to play positions they weren’t as familiar with. Despite this there was some nice ball movement and definite improvement from the last game.”

The Cougars are back in action Thursday at Point Arena at 4:30 p.m. Kelseyville travels to Lower Lake on Tuesday for a 6:15 p.m. game.
