Mountain Vista, Middletown advance

No. 1 seed Terrace, No. 2 Upper Lake play Saturday in semifinal round

KELSEYVILLE >> Mountain Vista and Middletown advanced to the semifinal round of the Lake County Junior High Athletic League middle school softball playoffs Thursday with first-round wins.

Mountain Vista, the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 6 seed Lucerne 12-2 in four innings at Kelseyville while No. 5 seed Middletown upset No. 4 seed Obsidian 13-7 in Clearlake Oaks.

As a result of Thursday’s results, Mountain Vista draws No. 2 seed Upper Lake, and Middletown plays No. 1 seed Terrace 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals at Middletown High School. Winners advance to the championship game at 1:30 p.m. and losers play for third place, also at 1:30 p.m. The fifth-place game between Lucerne and Obsidian takes place Friday at 4:30 p.m., with Obsidian hosting the game.

Mountain Vista 12, Lucerne 2 (4 inn.)

At Kelseyville, Carly Gleason went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs as Mountain Vista handled Lucerne in short order. Winning pitcher Madi Byrne struck out six and helped her own cause by going 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

“We were leery of Lucerne because they have improved greatly, but our girls came out motivated, confident and played as a team,” Mountain Vista head coach Patrick Mick said.

Brooke Poff went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Bella Espinoza (1-for-1) drove in three runs and Gabby Keyes (1-for-2) knocked in two more. Kiera Mick went 1-for-1 with a RBI. Kaitlyn Tarin also had a hit.

Lucerne statistics were not reported.

Middletown 13, Obsidian 7

At Clearlake Oaks, Lilliaunna Reyes struck out 10 while allowing only three earned runs as Middletown beat Obsidian in first-round play. The Broncos and Bears were tied 7-7 going to the sixth inning when Middletown erupted for six runs.

Sophie Steston and Mia Martin carried the offensive load for Middletown, each with three hits. Stetson also knocked in three runs while Martin had one RBI. Reyes went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

Obsidian statistics were not reported.
