CLOVERDALE >> Madi Byrne homered twice among her three hits and drove in three runs, but Mountain Vista fell 9-5 to Washington in middle school softball action Monday afternoon in Cloverdale.

Byrne’s first home run was an inside-the-park blast while the second one easily cleared the fence.

The non-league game was the final tuneup for Mountain Vista before it opens play Thursday in the Lake County Junior High Athletic League playoffs. The Lancers are the No. 3-seeded team and meet No. 6 Lucerne in a first-round game.

While Byrne was swinging the bat well against Washington as was Carly Gleason (2-for-3, RBI), most of the Mountain Vista batters struggled at the plate, according to head coach Patrick Mick.

“Our bats were flat today against their hard-throwing pitcher, who pitched great today,” Mick said. “Only four Mountain Vista players got hits.”

Kiera Mick (1-for-3, RBI) and Gabby Keyes (1-for-3) had the other hits for the Lancers.

Byrne was the losing pitcher. She struck out seven in four innings before being relieved by Taylor Wood, who struck out one in her only inning of work.

“It was basically a practice game for us,” Mick said. “Everybody played and we know now what to work on.”
