Tournament honors longtime Mountain Vista coach, principal

KELSEYVILLE >> The 36th annual John Berry’s “Road to Crescent City” tournament for eighth-grade boys basketball teams opened Friday and runs through Saturday at the Mountain Vista Middle School gym.
The tournament is named after the longtime Mountain Vista eighth-grade boys basketball coach, middle school principal and Kelseyville High School golf coach who died in September of 2024.
First-round winners in the eight-team tournament Friday were Mountain Vista, 34-29, over St. Bernard’s White, McKinleyville, 47-27, over Lloyd Johnson, St. Bernard’s Blue, 40-33, over Pomolita, and Rincon Valley, 75-13, over Middletown.
Winner’s semifinal-round games Saturday pair Rincon Valley against St. Bernard’s Blue, and Mountain Vista against McKinleyville. The winners of those games advance to the championship at 6:15 p.m. while the losers play for third place at 5 p.m.
Pomolita defeated Middletown while St. Bernard’s beat Lloyd Johnson in the consolation semifinals held Saturday morning. As a result, Pomolita plays St. Bernard’s White for the consolation championship at 3:45 p.m. while Middletown and Lloyd Johnson square off for seventh place at 2:30 p.m.
