UPPER LAKE >> Cali Kelley’s RBI single capped a two-run bottom of the eighth inning as the Upper Lake Wildcats walked off with a 10-9 victory over the Middletown Broncos in middle school softball action Monday in Upper Lake.

Middletown (3-6 league, 8-6 overall) scored a run in the top of the eighth to push in front 9-8, then Upper Lake rallied in the bottom half to win it.

“Middletown played a hard-fought game,” Upper Lake coach Wyatt Hensley said. “Our girls played strong until the very last pitch.”

Kelley went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, one of three Upper Lake players with three hits. The others were Jordin Hughes, who went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Matilda Boomer, who went 3-for-4 with a double.

Winning pitcher Bella Stillman struck out 11 while her battery mate, catcher Hughes, threw out three runners on the bases.

In other middle school action Monday:

Mountain Vista 13, Lucerne 5

At Kelseyville, Lucerne held a 4-3 lead after two innings, but Mountain Vista found its hitting stroke late in the game to knock off the Eagles and snap their two-game winning streak.

“Our bats finally woke up,” Mountain Vista head coach Patrick Mick said. “We scored nine runs in the final two innings.”

Carly Gleason (1-for-3) smacked a two-run home run for the Lancers (4-5, 8-5) and Madi Byrne (3-for-3, three RBIs) added a solo shot. Paelynn Beall, Kiera Mick, Taylor Wood and Maylee Antoni added two hits apiece. Mick doubled and drove in two runs while Wood also had two RBIs. Antoni also knocked in a run. Mountain Vista hosts Middletown on Wednesday.

Terrace 10, Obsidian 0 (4 inn.)

At Lakeport, winning pitcher Sophia Gonzalez was perfect as the Terrace Vikings beat the Obsidian Bears in a game called four innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Gonzalez struck out eight.

Amelie Davis went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Vikings (7-1, 12-2) and Cassie Gamez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

“Bats were hot and defense came through together to help Sophia earn her first career perfect game,” Terrace head coach Lynn Cruz said. “Sad the season is ending, yet so proud of how far these ladies have come.”

Added assistant coach Shady Cerezo, “Sophia was locked in. She was throwing hard and mixing in her off-speed pitches, which kept Obsidian hitters out of sync. It was exciting to watch.”

Cerezo also praised the play of the team’s outfield.

“Our outfielders have improved so much from the beginning of the season to now. They snagged some flyballs that earlier in the season would have found the ground. I’m really proud of these girls.”
