MIDDLETOWN >> Gustavo Valadez hit a contested running layup with 25 seconds left and Dom Kerney sank two pressure-packed free throws moments later to give Terrace Middle School a dramatic 47-45 win over Middletown Middle School in boys basketball action Wednesday in Middletown.
Terrace (1-1 league, 2-2 overall) trailed by nine points with 3:48 left to play and by three points with 26 seconds left. After Valadez’s basket tied the game at 45-all, the Vikings switched to press defense and Kerney stole the ball. He was fouled taking a shot to earn two free throws.
“He stepped up and buried both free throws,” Terrace head coach Jeremy Hopkins said. “Clutch shots.”
Both Kerney and Eric Chavez finished the game with double-doubles. Kerney had 11 points, 10 rebounds and two steals while Chavez finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Valadez added eight points and Andrew Lisk had seven.
“Great comeback win,” Hopkins said. “Chavez was a monster on defense and kept us in the game in the second quarter (scoring eight of the team’s 12 points). Dom was all over the play on the boards and played tough all game. Lisk and Gus hit some huge shots at key moments.”
Terrace opens play in the Fort Bragg Tournament on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
