KELSEYVILLE >> Anaya Kilstrom led the way with 10 points and eight rebounds as the Middletown Middle School A girls basketball team defeated Mountain Vista Middle School 38-28 on Wednesday evening in Kelseyville.

Middletown (7-0 league, 12-2 overall) built a 22-9 halftime lead before wavering a bit in the final minutes.

“We got a little sloppy with the ball and had too many turnovers toward the end of the game, allowing them to get back in it,” Middletown head coach Shannon Williams said.

“We never trailed in the game,” Williams said. “Our biggest lead was 20 points.”

Jaquelin Nunez finished with nine points and Emma Davis had six points and five rebounds as the Broncos closed in on a perfect regular season. They finish their league schedule Thursday night in Upper Lake.

“Overall, it was a very well-rounded effort with nearly every player contributing with scoring and excellent defense all around,” Williams said.

“Jaquelin Nunez really shined tonight,” Williams said.

Grace Williams led the team with nine steals.

B team wins

Middletown’s B team also beat Mountain Vista, though the Broncos needed overtime to do it. Sophia Azevedo scored all six of Middletown’s points in the overtime of a 28-23 victory. She finished with a team-high 17 points.

“Mountain Vista had two players we hadn’t seen the last time we played each other,” Middletown head coach Erika Galvan said. “We weren’t prepared and got off to a very slow start. In the first half none of our shots were going in.”

Middletown rallied from a 10-1 halftime deficit.

“Our defense was much better in the second half and our shots were going in,” Galvan said.

In addition to her 17 points, Azevedo also pulled down 10 rebounds. Stella Brand added six points and some “great defense,” according to Galvan, while Sophia Perez contributed a team-best eight steals as well as five points and four rebounds.”

Middletown is now 9-0 in league play and 14-2 overall. Just like the Middletown A team, the B squad can complete an undefeated league run with a victory Thursday in Upper Lake.
