LAKEPORT >> Kat Wheelan scored twice and Jacky Chavez had Kelseyville’s other goal in a 3-0 win over the Cloverdale Eagles during North Central League I varsity girls soccer action Thursday at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.
All three goals came in the second half as the Knights (1-1-1 league, 5-6-1 overall) notched their first league win in three tries.
“Coming into the second half the Lady Knights were determined to put some goals on the board,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said.
Wheelan, a forward, broke the 0-0 deadlock four minutes into the second half. Six minutes later Chavez, a forward, scored to make it 2-0. Wheelan’s second goal of the day came after colliding with the Cloverdale keeper.
“I’ve got to say that the Eagles put up a good fight today,” Kelseyville head coach Irma Rodriguez said. “They had some good shots at goal, but Knights keeper Cassie Rodriguez stopped them.”
Rodriguez said her standouts against Cloverdale were defenders Xiomara Arias, Vanessa Reyes, Mya Ogo and Arionna Sanders, and midfielders Regina Rico, Kylee Denham and Mikaela Rico.
“I also have to thank my assistant coach, Omar Rodriguez, for giving the Lady Knights the faith to believe in themselves and for pushing them to not give up,” Rodriguez said.
The Knights are on the road Saturday to play Roseland University Prep at 2 p.m. The game takes place at the Sonoma Academy High School field in Santa Rosa.
