ST. HELENA >> Three of Middletown High School’s four track and field teams – varsity boys, varsity girls, and frosh-soph girls – won their respective divisions during the final Coastal Mountain Conference meet of the regular season Wednesday at St. Helena High School, which will also host the CMC Championships on May 7.

“With one week to go until the CMC Championships, it was a good meet,” Middletown head coach Wyatt Hall said. “My athletes got to experience the track and facilities at St. Helena for the first time this year, which is helpful with them (Saints) hosting the championship this year.”

Added Hall, “Most of my athletes were competing in fewer events than normal because we have another meet this Friday in Corning (Gary Burton Invitational). With the lighter load, a few of my athletes were allowed to focus better on certain events.”

The best example, according to Hall, was senior Bryan Sanchez, who bested his own school record of 11 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault by clearing 12-0 at St. Helena.

“This week Sanchez was working with our pole vault coach, Eric Smith, to get more comfortable on a longer pole, and it paid off,” Hall said. “Sanchez looked fluid in most of his jumps, and the new pole gives him room to go even higher in future meets.”

Another Middletown standout was Makayla Mace, according to Hall.

“She finished the day with wins in the 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles and a second-place finish in the 100 meters,” Hall said. “Mace suffered an injury a few weeks ago that caused her to miss our last meet and a couple of weeks of practice. She had a little rust to knock off, but she should be 100 percent by next week.”
