MIDDLETOWN >> The Middletown High School junior varsity football team didn’t have an easy time shaking the Willits Wolverines, but they did enough to win 28-12 on Friday evening at Bill Foltmer Field in Middletown.

Middletown improved to 3-0 in the North Central League I standings and 5-0 overall.

Willits trailed 8-0 after one quarter but pushed ahead 12-8 with touchdowns in the second and third quarters. Middletown came back to score 20 unanswered points, including a 14-0 fourth quarter, to remain perfect on the season.

Diego Pimentel’s 71-yard kickoff return, coming just moments after Willits took its 12-8 lead midway through the third quarter, put the Mustangs ahead to stay. Quarterback Kolton Costlow touchdown runs of 5 yards early in the fourth quarter and 9 yards with 3:47 remaining put the game out of reach. Hudson Kelley added the conversion run after Kostow’s second touchdown.

Luce Mace’s 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Dre Goins’ conversion run staked Middletown to a 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Colton Karp rushed for 114 of Middletown’s 168 yards. Costlow had 35 rushing yards and was 2-for-4 passing for 27 yards.

On defense, Mace had three solo tackles and five assists while Goins and Lucas Hernandez finished with six and five tackles, respectively. Jay Lee intercepted a pass.

Middletown hits the road Friday to play St. Helena at 5 p.m.
