UPPER LAKE >> Quarterback Isaiah Pena passed for 110 yards and one touchdown and ran for another score Friday evening as the Upper Lake High School junior varsity football team shut out Clear Lake 18-0 in North Central League I action at Upper Lake.
Running back Brayan Vazquez Olem rushed for a team-best 68 yards on 14 carries as Upper Lake improved to 2-1 in the league standings and 3-2 overall. Clear Lake fell to 0-3 in the NCL I standings.
“It was a bit of a sloppy offensive performance overall,” Upper Lake head coach John Toohey said. “We put the ball on the ground four times.”
Upper Lake overcame 65 penalty yards on its second scoring drive.
“We’ll be working on discipline and detail this week in practice,” Toohey said.
Wide receiver TJ Malicay had an active game for the Cougars with four catches for 32 yards and three carries for 25 yards, and wide receiver Chase Noble scored touchdowns on each side of the ball, catching the touchdown pass thrown by Pena and also returning a fumble for a score.
Pena went 9-for-14 with the one TD and one interception.
On defense, middle linebacker Angelo Macias came up big with 12 solo tackles out of 13 overall, and one forced fumble. Outside linebacker Vazquez Olem finished with six tackles, including five solo stops and a sack.
“Defensively, we have made improvements in the back end and that showed up in the game,” Toohey said.
Upper Lake hosts Fort Bragg next Friday, the Cougars’ homecoming. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
