County sending six to Red Bluff competition in May

CORNING >> A handful of Lake County competitors distinguished themselves this past weekend during the California High School Rodeo Association District 2 Junior High finals in Corning.
All those finishing in the top five of their respective events advance to the State Finals scheduled for May in Red Bluff.
State qualifiers are Payton Shuster, a homeschooled seventh grader, who finished first in breakaway roping and fifth in goat tying; Alexis Yanez, an eighth-grader at Mountain Vista Middle School, who finished first in goat tying; Ella Thornton, an eighth-grader at Kelseyville Christian Academy, who topped the field in pole bending; Kailey Snell, an eighth-grader at Middletown Middle School, who finished third in breakaway roping, second in team roping and fourth in ribbon roping; Rylie Slaight, a seventh-grade at Middletown Middle School, who was second in breakaway roping, third in pole bending and fifth in barrel racing; and Claire Irwin, a seventh-grader at Middletown Middle School, who was fifth in breakaway roping.
