UPPER LAKE >> Aimee Schaefers struck out nine and walked only three Friday as the Upper Lake Cougars beat Credo 16-2 in non-league softball action in Upper Lake.
Upper Lake (2-1) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to snap a 1-1 tie. It was 6-2 going to the bottom of the fourth when the Cougars batted around and scored 10 times to go up 16-2. The game was called after the top of the fifth because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Schaefers scattered eight hits.
“Our bats were connecting beautifully while Credo’s bats had a harder time connecting with Schaefers’ pitches,” Upper Lake head coach Janice Klier said.
Upper Lake was missing two starting infielders, but other players on the team helped pick up the slack, including junior first baseman Camila Martin and sophomore second baseman Ava Witter, according to Klier.
“Witter and Martin really came through for us, smoothly filling in those (missing) spots to help maintain our team’s cohesion,” Klier said.
Portia Klier went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs while Martin (3-for-3, 4 RBIs) and Schaefers (3-for-4, double, RBI) also had a big day at the plate for the Cougars. Ashlyn Rhodes (2-for-3) added a two-run triple and three RBIs overall while also scoring twice.
Leyla Marcks added two hits and scored three times while Angelina Rivera went 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Witter (1-for-4) also knocked in a run. Courtesy runner Lexy Peregrina scored three times.
The Cougars return to action Tuesday at home against Maxwell at 4 p.m.
