KELSEYVILLE >> Madi Byrne homered twice, including a game-winning grand slam, while driving in six of Mountain Vista Middle School’s seven runs in a come-from-behind 7-4 softball victory over Washington Middle School of Cloverdale on Monday afternoon in Kelseyville.

Washington Middle School held a 4-0 lead in the non-league game until the bottom of the third inning when Byrne, the Mountain Vista shortstop, smacked a two-run homer. Kiera Mich’s RBI single later in the inning cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Lancers moved ahead to stay in the fourth on Byrne’s grand slam. She closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief.

“She was phenomenal today and did it all,” Mountain Vista head coach Patrick Mick said of Byrne. “Credit to our sound infield defense, which played errorless all day,” Mick added of catcher Bella Espinoza, first baseman Mick, second baseman Gabby Keyes, shortstops Byrne and Paelynn Beall, and third baseman Carly Gleason.

Beall, the first of three Mountain Vista pitchers, worked two innings, allowing two runs. Winning pitcher Taylor Wood worked the third and fourth, allowing two runs, while Byrne finished up.

Byrne went 2-for-3 with her two home runs and six RBIs. Mick and Brooke Poff both went 2-for-3, and Taylor Wood tripled.

Mountain Vista hosts Laytonville on March 24.
