LUCERNE >> Off to their best start in years, the Lucerne Eagles improved to 3-0 in middle school softball action by beating Upper Lake 10-3 in the league opener for both teams Monday afternoon in Lucerne.
Winning pitcher Angelina Gozony struck out eight in the five-inning game, which was called early because of darkness. She walked only one. Gozony also helped out at the plate, going 2-for-3 and scoring twice. Monique Gozony went 1-for-3 with a three-run double and four RBIs over, her bases-clearing hit giving Lucerne a 6-2 lead in the second inning.
Sophie Basurto and Chevelle Sprague each scored twice for the Eagles.
“I want to give a shoutout to my sixth-grader, second baseman Monique Gozony,” Lucerne head coach Fred Miller said. “I moved her down in the batting order because she wasn’t connecting well, but with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning she had the best hit of the game, a double to center field to bring in three runs.”
Upper Lake statistics were not reported.
Lucerne returns to action Wednesday with a road game against Obsidian at 4:30 p.m.
