M’town softball opens with 15-5 win

Mustangs need only six innings to take care of business against Willits Wolverines

MIDDLETOWN >> After spotting Willits a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Middletown High School softball team answered with seven in the bottom half, paving the way for a 15-5 victory in six innings Monday afternoon in Middletown.

It was the season opener for the Mustangs (1-0), who had a 10-2 lead after two innings. Winning pitcher Brooklyn Woods went the distance, scattering five hits, striking out four and walking three.

Leading 11-5, Middletown scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the six to bring an early end to the game as the 10-run mercy rule was invoked.

Six different Mustangs finished one hit each. Jaylee Doris (1-for-3) and Taylor Thompson (1-for-4) both had two RBIs. Wood, Sarah Fetters, Leahmya James West and Tallulah Madrid also had hits. Ally Cherry walked three times and scored twice. Madrid scored three times.

Middletown hosts Technology High School of Rohnert Park on Tuesday and remains home Friday to take on Justin-Siena of Napa. Both games begin at 4 p.m.
