Mace racks up team-best 41 kills as Mustangs win bronze division
ROHNERT PARK >> Middletown High School’s varsity volleyball went 3-2 on Saturday while winning the bronze division at the Rancho Cotate Tournament in Rohnert Park.
Entering the tournament with a 5-0 record, the Mustangs lost their first two matches of the season. St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda defeated Middletown 25-21, 25-12 while San Rafael also beat the Mustangs, 25-19, 25-18. St. Joseph went on to win the tournament.
Middletown (8-2) rallied with two victories over Clear Lake (match scores unavailable) and another against Armijo, 25-20, 25-16.
“The team had a tough morning playing catch up in all sets, yet in their style they played tough floor defense, and served to score,” Middletown head coach Norberto Quiroz said.
Carly Johnson finished the day with 20 kills and an “outstanding” hitting average (.385), according to Quiroz.
Makayla Mace had a team-best 41 kills to go along with 11 aces, Mia Hoogendoorn added 34 kills and 14 aces, Isa Barnes led the team in assists (49) and aces (15), and Jaylee Doris chipped in 22 assists and 13 aces.
Middletown is off until its North Central League I opener on Sept. 10 at Cloverdale.
