UPPER LAKE >> Upper Lake High School’s volleyball teams pushed the Cloverdale Eagles to the limit on Thursday night before dropping their respective North Central League I openers at Upper Lake.
In varsity action, Cloverdale rallied for a 25-11, 20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-6 win. Earlier during the JV match, the Eagles prevailed 23-25, 25-22, 15-3.
Varsity match
Aimee Schaefers recorded 11 kills, 11 blocks and four aces to help power the Cougars (0-1 league, 3-4 overall) while teammates Alyssa John (22 digs, 6 kills), Hope Marcks (17 assists, 14 digs) and Alyson Gomez (20 digs) turned in solid efforts.
“It was a hard-fought game for both teams,” Upper Lake head coach Dani Paige Gudmundson said of the best-of-five match. “Although it took us the first set to find our rhythm, we never backed down once we did. We made some adjustments and provided great coverage. Every point was hard-earned, and I couldn’t be prouder of my team’s effort.”
Added Gudmundson, “While it’s never easy to lose, I am far from disappointed. I am very proud of our team and eagerly look forward to witnessing their growth throughout the rest of the season.”
JV match
Kenzie Foley had three digs and two aces, Addison Vipond added three aces and one dig, and Abigail Suzor had two blocks and one ace for the Upper Lake JVs against Cloverdale.
“The first set went point for point for a while,” Upper Lake head coach Fawn Rave said. “Kenzie Foley had a seven-serve run. The girls were playing well and had some good rallies.
“The second set took us a minute to get in the groove,” Rave added. “We had some great hustle from Riley Jones and Kenzie Foley, and they had some great saves. Addison Vipond had a run of five serves. We just couldn’t keep the lead.”
In the decisive third set, the Cougars struggled with serve receive and couldn’t recover.
“The girls got frustrated and we couldn’t get out of it,” Rave said. “Overall, all the girls did well. They had some good plays. We’ve got some things to work on.”\
Upper Lake’s teams are home twice next week. They host Fort Bragg on Tuesday and Clear Lake on Thursday. JV action starts at 5 p.m.
