FORT BRAGG >> A 19-point third quarter rallied Trinity to a 50-46 win over Clear Lake in the consolation championship game of the Vern Piver Holiday Classic on Saturday in Fort Bragg.

The Wolves (8-7) outscored Clear Lake (6-7) by a 19-11 margin in the third quarter to take a 44-38 lead. Clear Lake led 15-10 after one quarter and 27-25 at halftime.

“Tough one for our guys today,” Clear Lake head coach Mark Cory said. “We played well enough defensively to get the win. The third quarter we gave up 19 points. That was really the game.”

Clear Lake’s defense limited Trinity, which is out of Weaverville, to a single field goal and four free throws in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals couldn’t generate enough offense to overtake the Wolves.

“Offensively we were a bit out of sync but had some good looks at the hoop that just did not fall down the stretch,” Cory said.

Sawyer Smith led the Cardinals with 14 points and Jesse Hayes had 13. AJ Bruch was named to the All-Tournament team.

Clear Lake resumes its North Central League I schedule with two home games next week. The Cardinals host Fort Bragg on Tuesday and Cloverdale on Friday. The Cardinals are 1-1 through their first two league games.
