CONCORD >> Upper Lake High School’s Lexy Peregrina rang in the new year and gave herself an early birthday present Friday by winning the 135-pound championship at the Contest of Champions in Concord.
Winners in each weight class receive a championship ring.
Peregrina, who turned 17 on Saturday, received a first-round bye before winning three straight matches by pin, including a third-round pin of Sylvia Heloin of California High School (San Ramon) in the 135-pound finals.
Earlier in the semifinals, Peregrina pinned Angelian Schlumpberger of Albany in the first round. Schlumpberger went on to finish third.
Peregrina scored another first-round pin in a second-round match against Essence Abosolo of Foothill High School of Pleasanton.
The Upper Lake junior is 20-3 on the season.
Upper Lake placed 17th out of 50 teams.
As I type, I’m watching tryouts for a 7 on 7 team at Gordon Sadler Field. I’m very pleased with the presentation on their Mission Statement and, more importantly, the instruction. There’s 16 boys participating. It’s an investment. This is for all kids, county-wide. If you want your child to become a better FB player, this could be for them. Tryouts will be held tomorrow from 12-2:30 at the same field. If you want more information, go to Hokulani Wickard’s Facebook page and you can get more information.
Thanks for your time.
