FORT BRAGG >> Winning all but second doubles, the Middletown High School tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 4-1 victory Monday over the Fort Bragg Timberwolves in Fort Bragg.

Will Hoskins won 6-1, 6-1 in first singles, Harrison Brown prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in second singles, and Anthony Lopez won 6-0, 6-0 in third singles.

The Mustangs also picked up a victory in No. 1 doubles where Leland and Josiah Pike combined for a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

In second doubles, Olivia Ruiz and Arianna Sypnicki played the first set for Middletown while Ruiz and Siobhan Ryan played the second set and tiebreaker (in place of a third set) while falling to Fort Bragg. The Timberwolves prevailed 6-3, 6-7 (7-2), 7-5.

“I have three girls for that (second doubles) spot and the other coach let us play two girls for the first set and then switch out a player for the second set,” Middletown head coach Tony Hart said. “Arianna is hitting the ball well and we will settle that team this week. We just have not had enough practices.”

Added Hart, “Fort Bragg has a new coach and is building up his squad.”

Middletown’s match Tuesday with Ukiah has been canceled. The Mustangs are scheduled to play in Boonville on Friday against Anderson Valley.
