Cloverdale hands Mustangs 17-0 loss in league opener for both teams

MIDDLETOWN >> Cloverdale’s Camryn Bird and Grace Rhodes combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the Eagles, powered by a 10-run top of the first, shut out the Middletown Mustangs 17-0 in the North Central League I softball opener for both teams Thursday afternoon in Middletown.
Bird, a sophomore, struck out six and walked two over the first three innings. Rhodes, a freshman, struck out two and walked two over the final two innings.
Bird also had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Seven different Eagles had at least two hits as the team collected 20 in all. Rhodes went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored four times while Lexie Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Cloverdale (1-0 league, 6-2 overall) scored at least one run in every inning.
Middletown (0-1, 1-2) returns to action Tuesday at Kelseyville.
