Kelseyville High track and field team opens season at Big Cat Invitational in Santa Rosa

SANTA ROSA >> Nikolai Trippo finished second in the varsity boys 10-pound shotput while Rubi Raygoza won both the junior varsity girls shotput and discus as the Kelseyville High School track and field team opened a new season Saturday by competing in the Big Cat Invitational at Santa Rosa High School.

“Despite entering the competition with only 12 participants, the blend of experienced veterans and promising newcomers made a remarkable impressive, signaling a strong start to their season,” Kelseyville head coach Bert Olson said.

Kelseyville was one of 22 teams attending.

Varsity boys

Trippo, a sophomore, had a personal-best throw of 38 feet, 3 inches to take second place in the 10-pound shotput, the best finish by a Kelseyville varsity athlete.

Also for the Knights, Yahir Rodriguez finished the 200-meter sprint in 25.18 seconds, and he set a personal-best time of 53.64 in the 400.

Jacob Parker ran in the 400 (1 minutes, 2.31 seconds), the 800 (2:33.75) and 1,600 (5:39.66), setting personal best in the 800 and 1,600.

Among other Kelseyville varsity boys, Daniel Ballard ran a personal-best 1:06.0 in the 400, Austin Holmes completed in the 1,600 in 7:01.56, and John Carr had a personal-best toss of 33-22 in the 10-pound shotput.

JV boys

Trippo won the JV boys discus with a throw of 101-5 while Carr threw 73-4. Ballard competed in the 12-pound shotput and had a throw of 22-10.5.

In the JV boys high jump, Parker cleared 4-10.

JV girls

Raygoza won the shotput with a throw of 24-6, a personal best, and the discus with a toss of 72-2. Kiley Jones also competed in both events, throwing 13-11 in the shotput and 40-5 in the discus.

In the JV girls running events, Bella Patti placed third in the 200 in 29.39, Nyejzniya Krohn was close behind in 29.71, and Grace Hobbs finished in 32.16.

Aylin Aguilar competed in both the 800 (3:15.20) and 1,600 (personal-best 7:11.62). Krohn cleared 13-10.25 in the long jump.

Kelseyville returns to action Friday when it heads to Middletown to compete in the Middletown Field Event Invitational. The very next day, the Knights head to Petaluma to participate in the Gaucho Relay Invitational at Casa Grande High School.
