MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown High School senior Cat Barriga is a recipient of the Pursuing Victory with Honor award after competing in the CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield last weekend.

Barriga, the North Coast Section third-place medalist at 105 pounds this season, qualified for the state championships and won her first match before dropping the next two.

The Pursing Victory with Honor award is based on six core principles – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship.

According to the CIF, these individuals also possess impeccable character and excellent sportsmanship. They are hard-working, reliable and supportive teammates and are ambassadors for their sport.

Coaches nominate wrestlers for the award. Out of the 448 females who competed in Bakersfield she was among only a handful to be so honored.

Barriga is a three-sport standout for the Mustangs as she also competes in cross country in the fall as well as track and field in the spring.
