Wrestling club takes home championship, sportsmanship awards, individual honors

CLEARLAKE >> Gladiators Wrestling Club team members turned in a pair of strong performances during the weekend, including winning a team championship and sportsmanship award Saturday at the Willows Wrestling Tournament. They came back Sunday to collect 47 wins, 33 by pin, at the No Guts No Glory Tournament in Rancho Cordova.
“I’m honored to watch our wrestlers perform with a purpose and get a feeling of pride to see them perform with great sportsmanship as they were awarded for,” Gladiators coach Brandon Whittle said. “We have a great group of elementary school wrestlers. They are eager to practice and compete and take after our maturing middle school wrestlers.”
Added Whittle, “Our group of supporters, coaches, staff and ultimately parents shouldn’t go unnoticed when our attendance for tournaments is near 30 every weekend. It’s a good sign of commitment.”
The sportsmanship award the Gladiators received in Willows was voted on by the officials and was just one of many awards secured by the team. Besides taking home the team championship trophy, two Gladiators wrestlers received individual honors. Logun Whittle was named Outstanding Wrestlers in the lightweight division while Kailaya Philpot was named Outstanding Wrestler in the middleweight division.
First-place medals went to Colin Crow, who was 4-0 with three pins and one technical fall; to Alley Oakes, who was 5-0 with four pins; to Maverick Paminto, who was 4-0 with four pins; to Kailaya Philpot, who was 3-0 with three pins; and to Logun Philpot, who was 3-0 with two pins.
Second-place medals went to Laylony Barocio and Brantley Paminto.
Placing fourth were Brayden Paminto, Kaitlyn Crown and Elijah Tucker. Thomas Philpot and Branson Whittle came in fifth.
No Guts No Glory
During Sunday’s No Guts No Glory competition, Maverick Paminto won a pair of first-place medals, going 6-0 with six pins and improving to 38-15 on the season.
Other first-place medals went to Colin Crow, who was 3-0 with one pin and one technical fall, improving to 37-11 on the season; to Gary Oakes, who went 3-0 with three pins and is 20-8 overall; to Alley Oakes, who went 2-0 with two pins and is 15-4 overall; to Lilly Oakes, who went 2-0; to Kailaya Philpot, who went 2-0 with one pins and is 32-12 overall; to Elijah Tucker, who went 5-1 with four pins and one technical fall and is 34-13 overall; and to Logun Whittle, who went 3-0 with two technical falls and is 27-6 overall.
Collecting seconds were Kylie Dugger, Hayden Janssen, Brodie McDaniel, Brayden Paminto, Jameson Philpot, Thomas Philpot, Elijah Tucker and Branson Whittle.
Thirds went to Kaitlyn Crow and Olyver Dugger.
