Furious fourth-quarter rally by Clear Lake falls just short at Durham tourney

ST. HELENA >> Jon Hawkins recorded his second straight double-double while Bodhi Moore scored 18 points with four 3-pointers as the Middletown High School varsity boys basketball team advanced to the finals of the Sutter Home Tournament with a 47-31 win over Sonoma Academy on Friday night in St. Helena.
Middletown (3-0) plays tournament host St. Helena for the title Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
“We played a great all-around game and kept our composure through all four quarters,” Middletown head coach Jake Diehl said. “It was a very physical game. I am proud of the way our guys handled themselves.”
Hawkins finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds a night after pulling down 13 rebounds and blocking 10 shots in a first-round win over Elite. Harrison Brown added 11 points. Moore also had five assists.
Unlike its first two games of the season, Middletown played a solid first half and led 25-16 at the intermission.
Middletown’s junior varsity team beat Lower Lake 61-31 at the Lower Lake JV Tournament.
Kai Connolly led Lower Lake with 10 points, Aiden Osorio added eight more, and Adrian Negrete had five. Middletown statistics were not reported.

Herb Jergentz Tournament
Paradise 53, Clear Lake 50
At Durham, a fourth-quarter rally by the Clear Lake Cardinals fell just short as they fell to Paradise in the consolation semifinals of the Herb Jergentz Tournament at Durham High School.
Clear Lake (0-2) trailed 42-25 after three quarters.
“We made a furious comeback that fell short,” Clear Lake head coach Mark Cory said.
AJ Bruch led Clear Lake with 18 points while Kaden Graham and Jesse Hayes each had eight.
“We played really hard and tough the whole game,” Cory said. “Making baskets was tough to come by for the first three quarters. The team was getting good looks at the basket, they just weren’t falling.”
Clear Lake plays Anderson for seventh place Saturday at 3 p.m.
In the tournament’s JV bracket, Hoopa Valley beat Clear Lake 70-43 in the consolation semifinals. The Cardinals play for seventh place on Saturday as the tournament wraps up.
Leading 38-30 at halftime, Hoopa Valley pulled away with a 16-9 third quarter.
Ayden Moreno’s 12 points paced the Cardinals while Noah Clever added 10 and Joey Portlock eight.
“We are improving,” Clear Lake head coach Shady Cerezo said. “We went into this tournament so we can get better and grow and I’ve felt that we have done that.”
Redwood Classic
Mendocino 74, Lower Lake 24
At Boonville, after splitting its first two games Wednesday during the opening rounds of the Redwood Classic at Anderson Valley High School in Boonville, the Lower Lake Trojans took one on the chin during a third-round game against Mendocino High School.
“Totally different team than the team that played Potter Valley and VCA,” Lower Lake head coach Anthony Farrington said. “It was an off night, but tomorrow I hope that we will get back to business.”
Noah Hakala led the Trojans with eight points while Raijhier McKneely had seven.
Lower Lake plays Round Valley in final-round action Saturday at 2 p.m. The Trojans open their North Central League I schedule Tuesday in Kelseyville.
