SANTA ROSA >> As soon as the Middletown offense woke up, it was game over for Napa High School as the Lady Mustangs picked up the pace in the second half to win 51-18 in the consolation championship game of the Piner Tournament on Saturday in Santa Rosa.

“We finally woke up in the second half,” Middletown head coach Roxi Holt said after the Mustangs scored just 14 points in the first half and yet still led by 10 – 14-4 – at halftime.

“There really wasn’t much for me to say to them at halftime,” Holt said. “We just needed to play our game.”

One bright spot in the first half was the play of Harley Holley, who scored eight of her nine points during the first two quarters.

“Harley was able to find it tonight,” Holt said. “Her eight points gave us a lift in the first half. She did a great job.”

The rest of the Mustangs didn’t heat up until the second half, including senior Mia Hoogendoorn, who scored 18 of her team-leading 22 points over the final two quarters, including three 3-pointers.

Izzi Hoogendoorn, a freshman, finished with eight points and Jordyn Harbison added five.

Middletown led 5-0 after one quarter. The Mustangs outscored Napa 37-14 in the second half.

The Mustangs (4-1), defending co-North Central League I champions, begin defense of their title against the other co-defending NCL I champion, Cloverdale, on Tuesday night in Cloverdale. It’s a three-game set beginning with the junior varsity boys at 4 p.m., the varsity girls at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity boys at 7 p.m. Cloverdale doesn’t have a JV girls team.

In other girls action Saturday:

Piner Tournament

Kelseyville 64, Roseland University Prep 16

Kelseyville (1-3) nailed down its first win of the season, beating Roseland University Prep in the seventh-place game of the Piner Tournament.

“The girls were ready to get after it today,” Kelseyville head coach Tim Conrad said. “They were eager to get in the win column.”

Ashlyn Wurm and Olivia Hommer powered the offense with 17 points apiece while Matisyn Mateer just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Other significant contributors were Cali Schnabl with nine points and Briana Davis with seven points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

“Our defense was outstanding,” Conrad said. “The girls were talking, moving their feet and off to end at that end of the floor. We were everywhere. Every girl got a lot of playing time and made good on their opportunities.”

The Knights hit the road Tuesday to play Lower Lake (1-3) in the league opener for both teams.

Sandy Mac Tournament

Ferndale 36, Lower Lake 15

At Cloverdale, shooting just 6-for-52 from the field, the Lower Lake Trojans lost to the Ferndale Wildcats in the consolation championship game of the Sandy Mac Tournament at Cloverdale High School.

“The defense was slow to react today,” Lower Lake head coach Shannon Tubbs said. “Our offense had no continuity to it.”

Brooke Watson finished with five points to lead the team while Jamiya Lee-Ayers pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds.

“We just couldn’t find a way to get out of the rut we created,” Tubbs said. “We’re hoping to get things in order before Tuesday’s game against Kelseyville.”

Lower Lake’s junior varsity team put a fight before falling 39-32 to Lodi in the championship game of the Galt Tournament. Lily Milano led the Trojans (3-1) with 12 points, Olivia Paul added eight and All-Tournament selection Madelyn Garner had seven.

“We played a higher-caliber team that challenged us,” Lower Lake head coach Jessica Wiley said. “A lot of lessons were learned, and we saw girls get the chance to step up.”

The Trojans host Kelseyville on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the league opener for both teams.
