MCKINLEYVILLE >> Kelseyville took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter but had trouble finding the basket the rest of the night, falling 52-17 to the McKinleyville Panthers in the season opener for both of these varsity girls basketball teams Monday night in McKinleyville.
“McKinleyville was too big and too aggressive,” Kelseyville head coach Tim Conrad said. “They were more ready to play than us. I need to do a better job at getting us ready to play.”
The Panthers (1-0) pushed ahead in the second quarter and took a 20-12 lead into halftime. They put the game away with a 17-4 third quarter.
“It is tough on the girls starting a new program having to learn all new everything,” added Conrad, the Knights’ first-year coach. “We are going to be a work in progress, but I have confidence that we will begin to put it together. We had the lead after the first quarter, which was a big positive. Our defense was real tough and offensively we were moving the ball well.”
Ashlyn Wurm’s six points led the Knights while Olivia Hommer added four points, four rebounds and three steals. Cali Schnabl contributed three points and a team-high five rebounds, Briana Davis blocked four shots, and Matisyn Mateer had two points, three steals and three blocks.
Kelseyville (0-1) returns to action Thursday against Rancho Cotate in the opening round of the Piner Tournament in Santa Rosa.
