LAKEPORT >> Westshore’s defense scored the first eight points of the game on a safety and a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown while shutting out Kelseyville 37-0 during junior varsity action in the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League on Saturday evening in Lakeport.

Chase Polland was credited with the safety while Pops Horne recovered the fumble for the game’s first touchdown.

Once the Westshore offense found its stride, the Cardinals’ lead continued to build. Horne passed for a pair of touchdowns, both to LJ Hopkins, Jake Hayes rushed for a 2-yard score, and Luke Percaccio returned a punt 60 yards to set up his own 1-yard touchdown run as MJ Knight added the conversion kick. Knight went 3-for-5 on PATs.

With the score at 37-0, the game moved to a running clock not long after a big tackle by Ava Meadors.

Defensive standouts for Westshore, now 4-0-1 in the league standings, were Hayes, Knight, Percaccio and Aaron Wangberg, all with four tackles apiece. Hopkins and Joseph Szupello each had two tackles.

“Our defense dominated the entire game and our offense took over once they got rolling,” Westshore head coach Sid Percaccio said. “Our kids have been working hard all season and it’s been showing on the field.”

Westshore hits the road to play Fort Bragg on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The pee wee game kicks off at 4 p.m. while the varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m.
