Pivniska’s 25-yard touchdown run in third quarter lifts Kelseyville in season finale

LAKEPORT >> Kelseyville High School’s junior varsity football team nailed down sole possession of second place in the final North Central League I standings with a 14-8 victory over the St. Helena Saints on Friday night at Don Owens Stadium in Lakeport.
It was the season finale for both teams.
Kelseyville (7-1) needed a win and a Middletown loss to Upper Lake to earn a share of the NCL I championship, but the Mustangs wrapped up the undisputed title with a 35-8 victory to close out a perfect league campaign (8-0) and season (10-0). St. Helena finishes 4-4.
Trailing 8-7 at halftime, the Knights pushed ahead to stay on Case Pivniska’s 25-yard run with 7:43 left in the third quarter, George Gonzalez added his second extra-point kick of the game.
Kelseyville jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter following Gordon Astrup’s blocked punt that the Knights recovered at the St. Helena 3-yard line. Jayden Fabisch scored on the very next play, punching his way into the end zone.
St. Helena moved ahead 8-7 with 5:37 left in the half.
Pivniska led Kelseyville’s running game with 84 yards on seven carries while also catching a pass for 15 yards. Brayton Thomas added 39 yards on five carries and Fabisch had 26 yards on six carries.
Andrew Souza, Aurelius Santos and Deake Lyndall anchored the Kelseyville defense with eight tackles apiece. Lyndall also had a sack. Astrup finished with seven tackles while Pivniska and Angel Ruiz each had six. Benjamin Lara finished with five tackles, including a sack.
