UKIAH >> Honoring their outgoing sophomores with a down-to-the-wire win, the Mendocino Eagles scored a come-from-behind 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 25-15, 16-14 win over Napa Valley College on Friday night in Ukiah.
The team’s sophomores – Stella Hill (Clear Lake), Montana Wells (Clear Lake), Madison Brewster (Clear Lake) and Aily Chavez (Willits) – all played a prominent role in the team’s victory, which included rallying from an 8-1 deficit to win the first set.
“Definitely the most exciting game we have played all season,” Mendocino College head coach Kat Edmonds said. “I think the stats speak volumes. The ladies played really well. They were aggressive defensively and offensively. We played together and played hard. I am really proud of them.”
Hill finished with 23 digs, seven kills and two aces while Wells added 13 kills, six blocks and one ace. Brewster led the team with 28 digs and also had seven kills, three blocks and one ace, and Chavez had eight digs, four kills and one block.
No one had a bigger game at the net than did freshman Cora Holley (Middletown) with 21 kills and three blocks. Two other freshmen also had a good night. Setter Jayden Paulich (Kelseyville) contributed 52 assists, 13 digs, five aces and two blocks, and Breanna Pyzer (Middletown) added 24 digs and two aces.
“We had some personal bests set this match,” Edmonds said. “It was a nice win for sophomore night.”
The Eagles (4-5 conference, 10-20 overall) close out the season Wednesday at home against Yuba College at 6 p.m.
