Mustangs wrap up North Central League I championship at home against Upper Lake

MIDDLETOWN >> John Finney rushed for 231 yards and four touchdowns Friday night to put the finishing touches on an undefeated season for the Middletown High School junior varsity football team, which clinched the outright North Central League I championship with a 35-8 win over the Upper Lake Cougars in Middletown.

The Mustangs end up 8-0 in the league standings and 10-0 overall in Tony Hart’s final season as head coach. Esteban Muniz added 97 rushing yards and a touchdown for a Middletown ground game that finished with 339 yards.

Middletown had a 35-0 lead before Upper Lake finally broke through in the fourth quarter on a Jacob Weldon 55-yard touchdown run. Weldon had 123 yards on 15 carries for the Cougars.

Muniz got the Mustangs on the scoreboard first with a 46-yard run in the first quarter. Finney scored the first of his four touchdowns on a 91-yard run later in the same quarter. Middletown moved out to a 21-0 halftime lead on Finney’s 58-yard run in the second quarter.

Finney scored twice more in the third quarter on runs of 58 and 34 yards.

Brody Costlow’s 10 total tackles led the Middletown defense. Jay Jensen added six tackles and an interception while Josue Gutierrez also had six tackles.

Weldon led the Cougars (4-4) with eight tackles and also blocked an extra point.
