LOWER LAKE >> An earlier Kelseyville Chiefs turnover led to a quick Lower Lake touchdown Saturday night, and the Trojans went on to post a 20-6 victory in the varsity division of the Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League at Gordon Sadler Field.
After the Chiefs lost a fumble on the soggy Lower Lake turf, dampened by rain earlier in the day, Lower Lake drove 35 yards for a touchdown, Roy Percoats scoring on a run and Ismael Orozco adding the conversion kick for an 8-0 lead.
Kelseyville’s next possession also ended with a turnover as Jaymen Bagsby intercepted a pass at the Kelseyville 22-yard line. Just as it had done earlier, Lower Lake quickly scored, again on a Percoats run, to make it 14-0.
Unable to move the ball on their possession of the game, the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs only to get it right back on an interception that left them at the Lower Lake 2-yard line, but a goal-line stand by the Trojans kept Kelseyville out of the end zone.
Taking a 14-0 lead into halftime, the Trojans added to their advantage on their second possession of the second half, Percoats scoring on a 17-yard run to make it 20-0. Kelseyville answered with a 51-yard scoring drive to close the deficit to 20-6.
“Our defense played really well all night,” Lower Lake head coach Mark Garner said. “I could not be more proud of them. Jaymen Bagsby did a real nice job with several tackles and an interception. Orozco also did really well with six tackles on the night.”
Lower Lake improved to 5-2 in the league standings while Kelseyville fell to 3-4. Both teams are on the road next Saturday – Lower Lake at Cloverdale and Kelseyville at Willits.
