UPPER LAKE >> The Lower Lake Trojans shut out the Upper Lake Cougars 5-0 in North Central League I boys soccer action Thursday in Upper Lake.

The Trojans (2-0 league, 6-1-1 overall) did all of their scoring in the first half. It was the league opener for the Cougars (0-1, 1-6).

“We started the game knowing that Lower Lake was playing with a mixed squad of starters and reserves, but that didn’t discourage our boys,” Upper Lake head coach Thomas Santana said. “Lower Lake scored within the first minute of the game, but they kept their heads up the whole time.”

Keeper Kyler Brothers had 17 saves while defender Mario Olvera had four saves. Other Upper Lake standouts were Jacob Colcleaser, Kayden Colthart and Alan Alvarado.

Lower Lake forward Agustin Sanchez Navarro dominated the game, according to Santana.

“He is a great player and he had four of their five goals, if not all five,” Santana said. “Our defense fought hard and Kyler did an amazing job. Being the field general, he controlled the spacing.”

Upper Lake lost two starters to injury early in the game, thinning out an already depleted Upper Lake bench.

“So my team of 19 was down to only one sub at the five-minute mark,” Santana said. “All of my subs played hard in the absence of many starters. We continue to improve week by week. I was definitely proud of their efforts.”

Upper Lake hosts Willits on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Upper Lake travels to Fort Bragg for a 5 p.m. game with the Timberwolves.
